How should energy flows within and between buildings be managed to ensure optimal use of resources? How can we achieve optimal interaction and exchange between a zero emission area/neighborhoods/positive energy block and the surrounding (“centralised”) energy system in a smart and flexible way?
With regards to zero emission neighborhoods/positive energy blocks, the operational phase: What new business models, roles and services are needed to overcome the lack of flexibility towards markets and moreover to catalyse the development of innovations for a broader public use?
Bodø Municipality has bold ambitions in the field of environment-friendly energy systems, energy supply and solutions. With the Municipality’s major development project “new city – new airport” at the core, the ambition is that the first area developed on former military base site, is planned and realised as a Zero Emission Neighbourhood (hereinafter “ZEN”).
The” new city – new airport” project entails that the current runway will be moved approximately 1km to the south-west. This will liberate 2 600 acres for new, innovative and sustainable urban development. However, these areas will not become available for development until 2024-2026.
To realise a ZEN neighbourhood/positive energy blocks or similar, a robust set of skills, knowledge, and competence is required. Thus, the Municipality will use the next 6-8 years to build up skills and facilitate for the development of solutions for future buildings and neighbourhoods with no greenhouse gas emissions. Realising pilot projects in the “current” city is the core of these efforts.
In addition to plan, construct and operate ZEN areas, the creation of new business models, roles and services that address the lack of flexibility towards markets and catalyse the development of innovations for a broader public use are of particular interest. Furthermore, and interesting area for the Municipality is how to manage energy flows (within and between buildings) and exchanges with the surrounding energy system in a smart and flexible way.
